By the late 1500s, London was a major centre for banking and commerce. From the 1970s, tall office buildings were constructed including the iconic Natwest Tower, the first skyscraper in the UK. There are two bus stations in The City, in Aldgate and at Liverpool Street, providing plenty of routes including a night bus service. 

  

One London River Services pier is located on the Thames within The City and provides regular passenger services.

 

Shopping and Restaurants

The City provides a number of retail opportunities, including department stores and a shopping centre. There are also a range of specialist shops, cafes, pubs, pop-up stalls and street-food vendors in the area, alongside a wealth of modern offices and skyscrapers. Several new, luxury hotels have also been built within The City boundaries over the past few years. 

 

More extensive shopping outlets can be found nearby in neighbouring boroughs, as well as a wide selection of restaurants, wine bars, pubs and cafes.
